Epiphytic fern fiddleheads

Epiphytic fern fiddlehead

Seems late in the year for fern growth but these guys are just taking off now that the autumn rains are starting.

I think these are polypodium scouleri but that’s just a guess from some browsing. They grow in the yard in the apple tree that gets the most shade. Some very attractive moss too. I was going to start learning about mosses and lichens but when I discovered that Washington boasts several thousand species of lichen, most of which look almost exactly the same, I went back to birds.
