Recycling: chickadee makes use of dead squirrel

Chickadee taking squirrel fur

Even in the rotten convolutions of death we may make nice soft lining for another’s nest eggs.

Uhhh, why is the squirrel corpse sitting on a railing?

I could tell you. But then I’d have to … uh … tell you?

Found him in the yard. Set him up for viewing. A sort of Nutunkamen exhibit. He fell down the next day and since I couldn’t see him in the long grass, I stepped on him. Interesting sound. Glad I got to try it without hurting anyone. Oh, and while wearing shoes. I could imagine the doctor’s visit that would be: “Well, how did you get a footful of bone splinters?”

I keep a running tally of dead squirrels in the neighborhood. Up to 6 this spring/summer.

Update: I remember now. I didn’t find him in the yard. I was cleaning the gutters and there was a terrible smell coming from the Monkey Puzzle tree that overhangs the roof. I found a squirrel nest. I poked it with a broom to break it up, figuring it was just squirrel poo and such, and that fella fell out. He was probably mummifying up there for a couple years.
